Tasha Boyd had a feeling she would give birth to the first baby of 2008 in Cherokee County—and she was right!

Ms. Boyd, 21, delivered Ja-Niyah Makenzee Kesler at 1:37 p.m. on New Year’s Day at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. The baby girl weighed six pounds and seven ounces, and measured 19 ½ inches long. Helping in the delivery was Laurie Hill, CNM, a certified nurse midwife, who said the baby appears to be healthy. The father is Johnthan Kesler, 23. Both parents are natives of Gaffney.

While receiving a large assortment of gifts provided by various local businesses and the hospital, Ms. Boyd said, “I said I would have the first baby of the New Year, and I did.”

"I saw her in the office six weeks ago, and she told me she was going to have the New Year’s baby," Hill said. Actually, the baby wasn’t officially due for another two weeks.

Both parents said it felt "wonderful" and "pretty good" to have the New Year’s baby of Cherokee County. They were especially pleased to receive a great many gifts. Each year, the hospital encourages local businesses to donate gifts to the New Year’s baby. In addition, Upstate Carolina provides about $200 worth of baby items. Among the donors and gifts were… Nestle (formula), Hartzog’s (picture frame and blanket), Hospice Care of SC (baby bag), Sticky Bristle Paint Co (Teddy bear), Jameson Inn (gift certificate), American Red Cross (2 infant CPR classes), Interim Health Care (blanket), The Book Shelf (bath and body set), Trackside Diner (gift certificate and 2 bibs), and H&E Scrap Metal (Huggies, wipes and suit of clothes)

Ms. Boyd said her experience at the hospital has been wonderful, especially with the "great nurses and having Laurie by my side." #
