With the help of hospital nurse Katie Wilson, R.N., Library Director Lana Gardner gave a "Read to Me" literacy packet to new mom Heather Wright of Blacksburg. To promote reading, the Cherokee County Public Library is providing a free copy of the children’s classic "Goodnight Moon" to the new mothers at Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Gardner made the first delivery of books on Dec. 28. In addition to "Goodnight Moon," the "Read to Me" literacy packets include a picture frame magnet, a bib, and book marker, all promoting the importance of reading to young children. She explained that for this project she secured a $2,780 grant from the Cherokee County Community Foundation and additional funds of $700 from the Friends of the Library organization. She has enough funds to provide packets to about 500 new moms. Upstate Carolina had delivered 422 babies year to date. Gardner said, "the Library hopes to be able to continue the program for years to come."
