Memorial Blood Drive to Remember Hospital Nurses

Upstate Carolina Medical Center will host a community blood drive Wednesday, Sept. 26, in remembrance of two nurses who died in a car wreck in June.

The event will be held 1-7 p.m. in the hospital’s front parking lot in two bloodmobiles, supplied by Piedmont Blood Bank. It will be in honor of Dana Mullinax and Daniel Vassey, both of whom were nurses in the Emergency Department. They died in a single-car accident in the early morning hours on June 15.

"Dana and Daniel’s deaths were a tragic loss to the hospital, to the community and to the nursing profession," hospital administrator Joe Howell said. "The hospital, as well as their families and friends, has grieved over them, but, at the same time, we’ve tried to remember their dedication and character. This blood drive is yet another way to express our feelings and to do some good in their honor."

In addition to this blood drive, Upstate Carolina created two $500 scholarships to be awarded annually to local citizens seeking careers in healthcare. This year, the scholarships were given to Curtis Tanner Ettlemyer and Anthony Scott Childers, both of whom are in college studying emergency medicine. Also, the hospital is currently working with Spartanburg Community College to create a small memorial garden in front of the hospital in remembrance of Dana and Daniel.

"Both Dana and Daniel were solid, well-loved members of the hospital family," Howell said. "We want to do whatever we can to remember them."

The blood drive is open to anyone who is at least 17 years old, weighs at least 110 pounds, and is in general good health. Because there will be two bloodmobiles, wait-times should be minimal. However, appointments are being taken by calling 487-4271.
