In memory of two nurses who recently perished in an automobile accident, Upstate Carolina Medical Center has established two $500 scholarships for Cherokee County citizens who plan for careers in healthcare.

The perpetual scholarships are in honor of Dana Mullinax, LPN, and Daniel Vassey, RN, two Emergency Department nurses who died in the early morning hours of Friday, June 15, 2007, in a tragic one-car accident. Both were long-time and well respected employees of the hospital.

These scholarships, which will be granted for the first time for the fall 2007 semester, will be administered by the hospital’s volunteers, who routinely grant one to four scholarships each year. This year, four scholarships have already been awarded.

The basic criteria to be considered for a scholarship is…
  • Be a citizen of Cherokee County or the child of a hospital employee.
  • Be seeking a college degree in human healthcare, such as to be a nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT, paramedic), doctor, pharmacist, etc.
  • Complete a formal application, available on-line at UpstateCarolina.org or the hospital’s information desk.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation.
  • Provide your most recent academic transcripts.
  • Submit a 1,000-word essay addressing your plans for a career in healthcare.
This year’s deadline to submit complete requirements is July 31. The volunteers will make their decisions by the middle of August. Unlike other hospital scholarships, these scholarships will be weighted toward individuals who demonstrate academic excellence, rather than financial need.

"With these scholarships we are not asking for personal financial data," hospital administrator Joe Howell said. "We are seeking those individuals who have the most potential to excel in healthcare. Education and achieving their personal best were important elements in the lives of Dana and Daniel. They were always trying to learn more and advance themselves to provide better healthcare for their patients. We want to honor them for their dedication to such high ideals."
