Hospital To Host Seminar On Men/Women’s Knee Replacements

Upstate Carolina Medical Center will present a free community seminar—HealthTalk—on gender-specific knee replacements Thursday, June 21, at 6 p.m. in the hospital’s cafeteria. Local orthopedic surgeon Spike Phillips, M.D., will be the guest speaker. The public is invited to attend this free event.

"This is one of the newest developments in knee replacements," hospital marketing director Steve Wong said. "Research has shown there is significant difference between men’s knees and women’s knees. They are shaped differently, and when they are to be replaced, the implants need to be specific to that gender. Zimmer, the implant maker, has had ads on TV for the past few months. It’s big news to people who suffer from knee pain and want the best relief possible. We’re glad to offer this surgery at Upstate Carolina Medical Center."

According to Zimmer, there has never been a better time for women with severe knee pain to consider joint replacement. Less-invasive surgical techniques have reduced hospital stays and shortened incisions, helping patients return home and to work sooner. High-flex knee implants can safely accommodate a full range of motion as far as you are able, from standing to deep bending. And now, all of these innovations are rolled into the first and only knee replacement specifically shaped and sized to optimally fit a woman’s anatomy.

The Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee has a unique shape and size that has three distinct differences from all other knee implants. It has a thinner profile, allows for more natural movement of the kneecap, and has a shape specially contoured for women.

Dr. Phillips will present about a 45-minute program and then answer questions from the audience. A light meal will be served before the presentation.
