Upstate Carolina Presents Diabetes Awareness Day
Prepared by: Steve Wong Upstate Carolina Medical Center Marketing Phone 864-487-1515 Diabetes is a big problem in Cherokee County, and Upstate Carolina Medical Center will bring a new sense of awareness to this disease by hosting a "Diabetes Awareness Day" on Saturday, June 23, 9 a.m. until noon, in the Main Lobby of the hospital. This event is free and open to the public. Various and many aspects of diabetes will be presented in a fair-like fashion, including free glucose checks (levels of sugar in the blood). Vendors that provide products and services to people with diabetes will be present. In addition, some health agencies will provide educational materials on this disease. "We’ve done diabetes health fairs and awareness days in the past," Kelly Morris, R.N., and Diabetes Educator, said. "We always have a lot of people come out. People need to know more about diabetes because it is such a bad problem in Cherokee County. At the same time, so much can be done to help these people. The key is knowing about the disease and how to properly treat the condition." There are free diabetes support group meetings held every other month at the hospital. Upstate Carolina also provides outpatient diabetes education to patients referred by their physician who are newly diagnosed with diabetes or are having difficulty controlling their diabetes. For more information, please contact Morris at 487-1652.
