Hospital Volunteers to Offer Four Scholarships

This is most scholarships the hospital?s volunteers have ever sponsored. Last year, there were two $1,000 scholarships. This year, there are three $1,000 scholarships and one $500 scholarship. "The volunteers and the hospital are very happy to offer local students college scholarships," Volunteer Director Steve Wong said. "It’s amazing that the volunteers are able to raise this kind of money simply by selling candy and flowers throughout the year. In addition to the volunteers adding another $1,000 scholarship to their offerings, the hospital is sponsoring a one-time $500 scholarship in honor of Ms. Margaret Turner, who after 15 years of volunteer service, is retiring. Two of the $1,000 scholarships and the $500 scholarship are open to any Cherokee County resident who is pursuing a career in healthcare. It is also open to the children of hospital employees, regardless of where they reside. The other $1,000 scholarship is available to the children of hospital employees, regardless of their course of study. All scholarships require 500-word essays on the student’s career/life goals. Additional requirements include two letters of recommendation, financial need documentation, the most up-to-date transcripts, and a completed application, which is available at the hospital’s information desk or by calling 487-1515. The deadline to apply for either scholarship is May 1, 2007. The winners will be announced on June 1, 2007. Financial need is granted special considerations. However, the volunteers reserve the right to award the scholarships on the applicants’ unique merits.
