He came a day late, but he was still the first.

Little Theron Frederick Garcia Jr., weighing in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces, was the first baby born in Cherokee County in 2007. However, instead being born on New Year's Day, he waited a day, being brought into 2007 on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 1:33 p.m. at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

He is the son of Theron and Lucretia Garcia of Gaffney. He is their third child, the parent also having a set of 5-year-old twins, Devin and Destiny, who were born Upstate Carolina. He was delivered via a scheduled C-section by local obstetrician/gynecologist Steven Lewis, M.D. He is healthy and 19 inches long.

The 25-year-old father is a native of Augusta, GA, and works at Advance Auto Parts. The 25-year-old mother is a native of Gaffney and works for Magnolia Finishing. They have been married for six years and reside in Gaffney.

"It's amazing," Mom said the next day, as she was presented with an arrangement of flowers and a basket full of baby goods given by the hospital. She also received a dozen red roses by local florist Daniel's Den of Flowers.

"I'm just glad I was here for it," said Dad, referring to when he had to miss the birth of his twins.

"I'm just shocked at when he came because with the twins, we were hoping for them to the New Year's babies in 2002," Mrs. Garcia said.

The maternal grandparents are Marvette and Ulysses Ellis of Gaffney. The paternal grandparents are Theron and Jean Parks of Augusta.

"We always look forward to seeing the first baby of the New Year," said Amy Hoffman, Director of the hospital's Women's Center. "All babies are special, but the first baby of the New Year represents a new beginning for everyone."
