Advance Directives are legal documents that allow you to give direction for your future medical care. They communicate your healthcare choices in case you become physically or mentally unable to do so yourself. These documents can also designate a healthcare surrogate; an individual who has the authority to make healthcare decisions for you if you are not able. Upon admission, we will also provide information about organ donation.
The state of South Carolina recognizes a Living Will and Healthcare Power of Attorney. Each patient must be given information and the opportunity to establish advance directives. Our Case Management Department can provide you with information about a Living Will, Healthcare Power of Attorney or organ donation. Please note that Emergency Medical Services (ambulances services) are required by state law to be given a separate Do Not Resuscitate order. For the complete guidelines regarding how to handle this procedure, please contact the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control at 803.734.5000. Ethical Issues![]() If you need assistance in making difficult decisions related to healthcare, the H.E.A.R. (Healthcare Ethics And Resources) committee may help you. To access this service, contact the nurse or other professional involved in your care.
